This month, your child will be studying the character word: FAIRNES. Being fair takes effort. Being impartial and unprejudiced requires balance and wisdom. As teachers and role models for our students, we can equip children with the lessons of fairness and provide them with an outlet to apply those lessons to actual situations.

Here is a guideline regarding children and fairness based on age:

  • With children ages 3 and 4; they are starting to learn right from wrong.  Teach them how to follow rules, take turns, and share.
  • With children ages 5 and 6; they are learning how to socially interact positively with others.  Teach them how to treat others the way they want to be treated.
  • With children ages 7 and 9; they are learning how to consider other’s feelings.  Teach them how to not pick favorites.
  • With children ages 10 and up; they are learning how to treat everyone as equals.  Teach them the benefits of democracy.

To accomplish this month’s goal of building fairness, it is important that you lead by example. Make sure that you don’t pick favorites, and make sure you follow the same rules you instill upon your children. If your children see you following the rules, treating everyone as equals, and not placing blame on others, they will be likely to follow your example.

Thank you for your support and we look forward to watching our youthful students build the skill of fairness.
